Working in Private Practice in Western Australia
Doctors employed in general practice (GP) or private specialist practice in Australia must be registered with the Health Insurance Commission (HIC) to participate in the Medicare scheme and to be eligible to have Medicare rebates paid for their professional services.
Your employer will assist you in this process upon commencement of your employment. Instructions on how to register with the Health Insurance Commission and how to obtain a Medicare Provider Number are available through the Health Insurance Commission. Please note that General Practitioners working in rural and remote areas may be eligible to receive additional rebates.
There are exemptions to the provision of HIC provider numbers, which may allow an overseas trained doctor to apply for a provider number to work in a rural or remote or outer metropolitan location prior to achieving fellowship. For information about rural and remote locations, please refer to the Western Australian Centre for Remote and Rural Medicine.
Overseas trained doctors should be aware of the current arrangements and obligations with respect to medical indemnity insurance whilst undertaking medical practice in Australia. More information on this can be obtained from the Australian Department of Health and Ageing. We welcome your feedback on this site and your comments on how it can be improved. Please use the feedback form to send your suggestions to us.
