Medical Indemnity
As in other countries, doctor's practising in Western Australia may become liable if they breach their professional duty of care, particularly negligence arising from their treatment of patients. Although doctors are not required to hold indemnity insurance in order to become registered in Western Australia it is recommended that such cover be obtained. The Department of Health provides, at no cost to doctors, medical indemnity covering public patients, and in the non-metropolitan areas, private patients treated in its hospitals and health services. Medical insurance covering patients treated in private hospitals and doctors' practices can be purchased from any of several Medical Defence Organisations located in Australia.
