Registration with the Medical Board of Western Australia

In order to work as a Medical Practitioner within Western Australian, you must be registered with the Medical Board of Western Australia. Registration can either be Conditional or Unconditional (General).

A person who is registered as a medical practitioner in another State or Territory of Australia may be entitled to be registered in Western Australia. For further information, refer to Medical Board WA.

General (Unconditional) Registration

To be eligible for General Registration, you must either be:

  1. A medical practitioner whose primary medical degree was obtained from an accredited Australian or New Zealand Medical School, or
  2. A medical practitioner who has successfully completed both the multiple-choice questionnaire (MCQ) and clinical component of the Australian Medical Council examinations together with twelve months of supervised clinical practice.

Eligibility is subject to the Board being satisfied the person:

  • is competent to practise medicine;
  • has a sound knowledge of the English language; and
  • is of good character.

Conditional Registration

Conditional registration is generally granted for a specific duration on an annual basis and subject to satisfactory performance. Registration may be granted for up to five years. Recognised Specialists are an exception to this as they are not subject to limitations.

For those medical practitioners seeking registration beyond five years, the Board would expect that the practitioner has successfully completed the Multi Choice Questionnaire (MCQ) and the Clinical components of the Australian Medical Council examinations followed by twelve months of supervised clinical practice prior to being eligible for general (unconditional) registration or progressing toward Fellowship of a recognised Australian Medical College.
