Unmet Areas of Need
Unmet Areas of Need is the most commonly used category of conditional registration.
A number of areas in Western Australia have been determined as Unmet Areas of Need, which means that overseas-qualified medical practitioners may be eligible for registration to work in these areas, even though they are not eligible for General Registration.
Positions range from resident medical officer to senior registrar in metropolitan teaching hospitals and general practitioners or medical specialists in remote and rural areas of Western Australia. For information on declared Unmet Areas of Need in Western Australia, please refer to Unmet Areas of Need.
Ongoing registration is subject to:
- annual satisfactory performance reports;
- the position in which the practitioner is registered (by sponsoring organisation) continues to be declared an Unmet Area of Need.
If registration is sought beyond 5 years, you must provide evidence of completing Australian Medical Council exams or progressing towards Fellowship of a recognised Australian Medical College
Recognised Specialist Qualifications and Experience
A medical practitioner whose specialist qualifications and experience were obtained outside Australia may be eligible for registration if registration is for the purpose of enabling practise in the specialty and the practitioner achieves the following:
- Fellowship to a recognised Specialist Medical College, or
- Has been deemed equivalent to that of an Australian trained specialist by the relevant Specialist Medical Colleges.
There is no time limit for registration in this category.
