Process to Achieve Registration

English Language Testing

English Language Testing is mandatory for any overseas trained doctor who is registering with the Medical Board. Refer to the Medical Board’s Policy for English Language Testing for full details and exemptions.

Please also refer to the Medical Board's Amended Policy, which will come in to effect from 1 February 2005.  The main changes are outlined in this letter provided by the Medical Board.

The Board considers the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) as an appropriate language testing model. However, alternative proficient tests will also be accepted.

Applicants should contact IELTS Australia on all matters relating to the administration of the IELTS English Test (Academic module), examination dates and its associated procedures. The IELTS English Test is held throughout Australia as well as overseas. The contact for IELTS Australia is:

General Registration

Medical practitioners who hold either an Australian or New Zealand primary degree qualification or have completed the Australian Medical Council exams (plus supervised practice) can apply for General (unconditional) Registration.

Medical practitioners who have a primary medical degree obtained outside Australia or New Zealand but have achieved Fellowship to a recognized Australian Specialist College should also contact the Medical Board to make an appointment for registration.

Conditional Registration

Those practitioners seeking 'Conditional Registration' with the Board, should first liaise with an employing / sponsoring organisation (see Vacancies). The employing/sponsoring organisation will then make an initial application to the Board on behalf of the practitioner. Once the Board has granted initial approval the medical practitioner will then be required to make an appointment and present to the Board with the appropriate documentation for registration.
