National Assessment Processes

The Department of Health Western Australia has been working with the Commonwealth Government towards phasing in nationally consistent assessment processes for International Medical Graduates (IMGs).
The nationally consistent assessment process is founded on the following principles:
- Australian governments aim to ensure all doctors registered in Australia are working at the same standard.
- The new assessment model provides a variety of pathways to registration, depending on the doctor’s previous training and assessment, knowledge base, clinical skills, and the suitability of their skills and experience for the position for which they are applying. The three main pathways are:
- The Competent Authority Pathway
- The Standard Pathway
- The Specialist Pathway
- Regardless of the assessment pathway, all pathways should lead applicants towards general registration.
