AMC Exam and Assessment

Examinations for OTDs

The Australian Medical Council Incorporated (AMC) is a national standards advisory body for medical education and training. As part of its core business the AMC administers the national examinations of overseas trained medical practitioners seeking to practise medicine in Australia. The AMC examinations are designed to assess the medical knowledge and clinical skills of overseas trained doctors for registration purposes.

Assessment of Overseas Trained Specialists

In relation to the assessment of overseas trained specialists, the AMC participates in two processes on behalf of the Specialist Medical Colleges and the State and Territory Medical Boards. These processes aim to determine the eligibility of applicants to proceed to assessment, on the basis of jointly agreed criteria. The AMC's primary role in this regard is to verify the required documentation submitted in support of applications, on the basis of correctly certified copies (eg identity, English proficiency, evidence of primary medical and specialist qualifications).

The assessment processes are designed for overseas trained specialists whose primary medical qualifications are not recognised in Australia but who wish to practise in their field of specialisation in Australia. The two 'pathways' are:

  1. Conditional registration (limited, specific, etc.) to practise unsupervised/independently in their recognised field of specialisation [the 'standard' pathway] and;
  2. Conditional registration to practise in designated Area of Need specialist positions.
