What are Unmet Areas of Need?
Medical Act 1984
In Western Australia Section 11AF(D) of the Medical Act 1894 (WA) enables the declaration of Unmet Area of Need.
Unmet Areas of Need Enable Employment of Overseas Trained Doctors
Unmet Areas of Need are determined for locations where there have been difficulties demonstrated in the recruitment of a medical practitioner. The declaration of Unmet Areas of Need enables the recruitment and employment of an overseas trained doctor to that location for the time period of the Unmet Areas of Need determination.
The state based Unmet Areas of Need process was established to ensure the most appropriate distribution for the medical workforce, ensuring that medical services are provided to areas most in need.
Positions or locations which have been determined to be in need, are published in the Government Gazette. The Department of Health maintains a database of gazetted determinations including locations and expiry dates. This information can be found at:
